Nancy Taylor Rosenberg hits
the New York Times bestseller list

ew york, September 27, 1993 -- Last January when she burst on the scene with her first legal thriller Mitigating Circumstances, few people outside of the publishing world knew the name Nancy Taylor Rosenberg. Eight months later, Rosenberg is a New York Times best-selling author--after only one week on sale, the Signet paperback Mitigating Circumstances has hit bestseller lists on The New York Times (#14 for the week of October 3, 1993), The Washington Post (#2 for the week of September 26, 1993) and Publishers Weekly (#13 for the week of September 27, 1993). There are one million copies of the Signet paperback in print.

From the initial bidding war through the six-figure film deal, record foreign sales, and a main selection book club sale to The Literary Guild, Mitigating Circumstances was the most talked about first novel when it was published in Dutton hardcover in January, 1993. Praised as Unstoppable...Presumed Innocent crossed with 'Thelma and Louise"' by Glamour and a "compulsively readable first novel" in a starred review by Publishers Weekly, Mitigating Circumstances hit local hardcover bestseller lists around the country including The Washington Post. The book was sold to Tri-Star Pictures with Jonathan Demme (Academy Award winner for "Silence of the Lambs") slated to direct. Tri-Star has just hired acclaimed writer/director Agnieszka Holland to write the screenplay. Holland is currently winning rave reviews for her first American directorial effort, "The Secret Garden."

In a field dominated by men, Nancy Taylor Rosenberg stands out. She continues her success with the her second novel, Interest of Justice which has just arrived in bookstores. With a first printing of 95,000, Interest of Justice is following the same pattern of success with impressive foreign sales, a Main Selection of The Literary Guild, and television rights sold to Citadel Entertainment for a four-hour, two-part miniseries.

Dutton/Signet's publishing program for Nancy Taylor Rosenberg demonstrates the successful synergy working between the hardcover and paperback imprints. A national advertising campaign has been launched to announce the simultaneous publishing of Mitigating Circumstances in paperback and Interest of Justice in hardcover, featuring fullpage ads in People magazine, The New York Times Book Review, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post Book World, and Chicago Tribune Books. In addition to national radio ads, full-color poster ads have been placed on mass transit buses throughout New York City and Chicago. Dutton/Signet is also offering a special rebate with the purchase of both books.

A 12-year veteran of law enforcement in Texas, New Mexico, and California, Rosenberg has learned first-hand about the criminal justice system. As an Investigative Probation Officer in Court Services for the county of Ventura, she handled major crimes such as homicide and multiple-county sex-related offenses. Rosenberg recalls her best work in law enforcement was done with a pen while reviewing trial transcripts. "They used to say I could write someone into prison. A public defender once tried to get me removed from a case because he said I used creative writing like a weapon."

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg is in the middle of a 20-city publicity tour this fall taking her across the country.
